Equation II
For the Equation series, John Kotos sought to find a new visual language for the idea of blending colors. The entire series pays homage to one of his favorite artists, Barnett Newman. In Equation II, John examined the idea of red + blue = purple. He chose these three colors, along with several light and dark shades of each. His goal was to illustrate this simple idea with all the subtle complexities of color relationships. Additionally, the piece is designed to be seen as an illustration of the growth of flowers. The red bottom represents the roots, the blue “zipper” in the middle signifies the soil, and the purple top portion shows what the viewer sees above ground.
