Being married to a concert pianist, I’ve spent a lot of time in the backstage rooms of concert halls. During those times, I would often bring a sketchpad along with me, doing sketch after sketch until the rehearsal or concert ended. This piece was inspired by one of those sketches, a sketch of the composer Johannes Brahms. Using a direct method of applying paint directly from the tube onto canvas, I wanted to capture the freshness of a pencil sketch, married it with the rich texture of paint.
