Barnacles
Researchers say that clusters of holes, bumps, or repetitive patterns project a type of visual energy that can cause an unpleasant reaction. It’s believed that the fear or discomfort comes from social anxiety, that the circles look a little bit like clusters of eyes or faces staring at you, which can be unsettling. Erica Toh finds the process of creating the artwork therapeutic and meaningful.
‘Barnacles’ isn’t your conventional style or definition of beauty, yet solace can be found within its seemingly chaotic and skin-crawling appearance, emphasizing the concept of beauty lies in the eyes of the beholder. It’s an example where the creation process is as important if not more important than the result.
