Hidden Boltraffio

Using only elements from the original work, Volker Hermes visually manipulates in his series “Hidden Portraits” famous Old Masters portraits, exploring expression when the face is obscured. By blocking the emotions expressed by the face, Hermes invites viewers to observe ancient codes of fashion as symbols of self-representation and social status. In his work: “Hidden Boltraffio”, he extends the precious woven lace of the garment worn by the young girl portrayed. The resulting dynamic loops are inspired by traditional rug patterns and shift the focus to the delicate details of her Renaissance dress and the high craftsmanship of weaving that has been a sign of belonging to an elite for centuries.
