Towards the Moon

In making this piece, Jane wanted to embrace her love of nature – but more than creating a purely figurative image, she also wanted to evoke a symbolic and atmospheric feel with the work. She has cherished a fascination with Lepidoptera since childhood and this has become evident in her recent cyanotype work.

The idea for this print began with tree silhouettes against the skies, which she took from one of her many photographs. She began playing with a mixture of negative and positive images. Most of her cyanotypes are made by changing her photograph to a negative image, which prints out as a positive in the cyanotype.

However, Jane liked the ethereal effect of trees against a moody night sky which resulted from exposing a positive image. The “moon” is simply a circular portion of the sky which she made into a negative and layered it onto the main composition.

Jane Spink

UK
Jane Spink is a UK-based artist who uses a variety of printmaking processes to explore her love of nature and the natural world. She would describe herself as “an artist who likes to explore ideas using printmaking and mixed media techniques. She enjoys harnessing processes which can lead to exciting and sometimes unpredictable outcomes and is always open to "happy accidents". Jane loves the strong, bold marks that can be made with relief printing processes and has written a book on linocut printing, which is due to be published in the UK at the end of March 2024. Equally, Jane is drawn to the more subtle ranges achievable with a host of other alternative printmaking techniques, including cyanotype, anthotype and lumen printing.
